Mary has extensive experience in teaching creative writing in universities, colleges, schools and in the community, and in mentoring emerging writers.
I have taught creative writing at Huddersfield University, Leeds University and, currently, Bolton University where I am a Senior Lecturer (0.4). I have also led courses for the Arvon Foundation at Lumb Bank, Maddingley Hall, Cambridge, and Northern College, Barnsley.
In a collaboration between Bolton University, the Arvon Foundation and the Chinese Arts Centre, I set up and ran The Writer’s Pathway, a distance-learning Creative Writing Course aimed at writers of Chinese inheritance. I continue to mentor some of the writers who took part.
I have devised and led playwrighting courses and workshops for the Royal Exchange Theatre, Sheffield Crucible Theatre and North West Playwrights. In the last two years I have mentored new writers for Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah, Yellow Earth Theatre Company and The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough.

Teacher, Mentor & Dramaturg
Mary worked with one of our new Dim Sum Nights writers based in Manchester. The initial script required quite a bit of reworking and rethinking but through skillful mentoring and guidance by Mary the finished piece worked extremely well for the actors and the audience and I know the writer was thrilled with the reception it had. I would not hesitate to recommend Mary as a dramaturge and mentor.
